Born in Durham, North Carolina in 1983, Will Goble followed a unique path prior to becoming an upright bassist and jazz musician. At the age of eleven, Will was given his first electric bass, and he soon found himself performing in local clubs, bars, and other venues with several local rock bands made up of his peers. This continued until his junior year of high school, where Will’s interest was piqued by the arrival of jazz educator Andrew Sioberg to Durham School of the Arts. Under Sioberg’s direction, Will took up the acoustic bass, and began studying jazz.

Following high school graduation, Will received a music scholarship to Florida State University, where he studied with famed bassist Rodney Jordan, as well as the world renowned pianist Marcus Roberts. FSU enabled Will the opportunity to connect and perform with musicians such as Wycliffe Gordon and Carl Allen. In 2005, Will’s ensemble performed at IAJE’s annual conference in Long Beach, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. In April of 2006, Marcus featured Will as a member of his quartet in Hampton, Virginia for a performance at Hampton University. After studying with Roberts for three years, Goble accepted an offer to return to Florida State as Marcus’s graduate assistant in 2006. This latest stint in Florida enabled Will to work frequently with his newly formed trio, which includes drummer David Potter and pianist Austin Johnson. On many Saturday nights, Will’s trio was featured at Paradigm, an under the radar jazz venue that has seen artists such as Wessell Anderson, Marcus Roberts, Wycliffe Gordon, and Roland Guerin among others, join the group as special guests. Will, David, and Austin have worked extensively as a stand-alone band, or as the rhythm section to musicians such as Jason Marsalis, Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Marcus Printup, David Guidi, John Ricci, Vincent Gardner, Barry Greene, and others across the United States and Canada.

As a sideman, Will currently free-lances alongside some of the best musicians in his new home base of Atlanta; in addtion to working around the southeast and beyond. Recent engagements have included Marcus Roberts, Jason Marsalis, Fred Wesley, Kevin Bales, Stephen Riley, Philip Harper, Martin Bejerano, Comedian Martin Short’s one-man musical act, and Scotty Barnhart. In December 2008, Will appeared on Jason Marsalis’s first album as a leader from the Vibraphone chair, entitled “Music Update.” Marcus Roberts recently featured Will as a member of his trio at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco in April of 2009. Will’s own group is commonly showcased at Studio 281 in Atlanta, GA and often welcomes guest artists such as Marcus Printup and Jason Marsalis to the bandstand.
